Realisation of Smart Safety
Signal's description
(approx. 150 words)
Please describe the Weak Signal (approx. 150 words)
An intelligent road-on-vehicle is technically possible and might lead to a safety enhancing infrastructure. Many feature are already technically realised - though not implemented yet. A permanent road-to-car communication could e.g. warn cars of red lights beforehand, offer an in-car countdown to green lights, gets traffic flowing and alerts drivers of stationary vehicles.

Technological/Scientific
progresses especially in ICT might allow a smart safety system
Major risks & opportunities associated to the signal
Please choose the most appropriate timeframe option(s) to which you would like to provide inputs.
Risks
Opportunities
before 2015
insurances might not pay if an accident happens due to a system failure
between 2015-2025
such safety features protect the driver on the one side but also make him less attentive as he relies on the system
safer transportation
Potential stakeholders' actions
short-term actions
(now-2015)
longer-term
(after 2015)
Policy actors (at the international, European and national levels)
establish a legal basis for the question of liability according to car insurances
adapt the infrastructure according to a holistic safety system
Academic/Research sector
not only foster research programs on technical feature but also take the drivers behaviour (e.g. loss of attention) into account
